April,2026,"RONGJIANG 2017" was published. 京張高鐵線路建設留念 道路——這個地球上最顯而易見的痕跡,并不只是人類獨有的。動物的遷徙或尋覓、植物的生長或分布,都可能會因為生存的選擇在大地或是在天空留下可以因循的蹤跡。而地球轉動形成的軌跡,也能夠在日出日落、春夏秋冬之間,在萬物進行著各自演變和相互影響中得到驗證。 除去這些 “自然”的道路,人類社會中的道路多由交流產生。古往今來雖然交流的原因和目的不同,但有了想從此地到達彼地的愿望,見什么如面都不如見面的向往,才可能有克服阻礙,逢山開路、遇水架橋的勞動。盡管時代已經發展到了眼下虛擬現實的地步,那也只是以虛妄模擬的方式向現實進行妥協的道路。 從2017年8月到2020年1月的這段時間,我拍攝了一條道路的建設——京張高鐵線路。這條于2016年開始鋪設的線路,是由從北京北站到張家口站的高速鐵路,加上下花園北站到太子城站的崇禮鐵路組成的,也被稱為是2022年北京冬奧會的鐵路客運專線。 原來也有一條110年前建成的京張鐵路。二十多年前,我由于工作原因多次往來于這條鐵路,在南口、青龍橋、八達嶺、康莊等等地方,頻繁領略過詹天佑的偉大設計和那些已經遠去建設者們的偉大創造。遺憾的是那時沒有留下什么影像。在拍攝京張高鐵線路建設的過程中,時不時地與這條鐵路相會。 還有時不時和這兩條鐵路相會就是另一項被譽為偉大工程的長城。在十多年前,我也多次駕車行進在北京到張家口之間,那個時期也由于工作原因只想拍下北京周邊的長城和經過的風景。 在我看來,鋪設京張高速鐵鐵路的建設者和100多年前京張鐵路的建設者,他們雖然相隔一百余年,盡管世界好像也有了翻天覆地的變化,他們在鋪設這兩條鐵路時所展現出的形態,卻都體現了人類想通過雙手的創造實現愿望的努力。也確實表明——在歷史的長河中這百年來的變化能有多大? 在整個過程中,我仍然同時使用數字和菲林進行拍攝。之所以這樣,是因為我個人固有的感覺偏見:數字表現色彩好像要優于彩色菲林,而從數字及后期得到的黑白影像,還不如直接用黑白菲林來進行呈現。 2022年6月張輝于北京 SOUVENIR OF BEIJING ZHANGJIAKOU HIGH SPEED RAILWAY LINE CONSTRUCTION Roads—the most visible traces upon the surface of the Earth—are not the sole invention of humankind. Animals, in migration or in search; plants, in growth and dispersal, all leave behind paths shaped by the necessity of survival, etched upon land or suspended in air. Even the rotation of the Earth itself inscribes its course, made legible through sunrise and sunset, through the passing of seasons, through the ceaseless evolution and mutual infuence of all living things. Beyond these “natural” paths, the roads of human society arise from communication. Across history, though the motives and purposes of exchange have varied, it is the desire to move from here to there—the longing for presence over mere representation—that has driven people to overcome obstacles: to carve passages through mountains, to span waters with bridges. Even in an age of virtual reality, such technologies remain only a compromise—an illusory simulation that still bends toward the authority of the real. From August 2017 to January 2020, I photographed the construction of a single road: the Beijing–Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway. Laid beginning in 2016, this route consists of the high-speed line from Beijing North Station to Zhangjiakou Station, together with the Chongli Railway from Xiahuayuan North Station to Taizicheng Station. It is also known as the dedicated railway passenger line for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. More than a century earlier, another Beijing–Zhangjiakou Railway had already been built. Over twenty years ago, because of my work, I traveled this line repeatedly, encountering at Nankou, Qinglongqiao, Badaling, Kangzhuang, and elsewhere the brilliance of Zhan Tianyou’s designs and the monumental achievements of those long-gone builders. Regretfully, I left behind few images from that time. During the course of photographing the new high-speed railway, I found myself repeatedly crossing paths with its predecessor. Intersecting these two railways, time and again, was yet another structure long celebrated as a great human undertaking: the Great Wall. More than a decade ago, I often drove between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, and during that period—again due to work—I focused only on photographing the sections of the Wall near Beijing and the landscapes along the way. To me, the builders of the Beijing–Zhangjiakou High-Speed Railway and those who constructed the original line over a hundred years ago, though separated by more than a century and despite a world seemingly transformed beyond recognition, share a common human posture. In both cases, their labor embodies humanity’s enduring efort to realize its aspirations through the work of its own hands. It also raises a quiet question: in the long river of history, how great have these hundred years of change truly been? Throughout this project, I worked simultaneously with both digital and flm photography.
