Foreword

If our previous exhibition Reflection & Phenomenon was a retreat into the inner self amid the gloom of the global pandemic, a quest for spiritual anchorage and vigilance within humanity and rationality; then this five-country humanistic photography exhibition, “From Eastern Europe to the East”, represents a heartfelt journey forward guided by light and shadow — a new expedition spanning latitudes and longitudes.

Centering on five regions — Russia, Romania, North Macedonia, Greece and China — this exhibition traces a vivid visual journey. It moves from the profound vastness of Russia’s wilderness and the solemn grandeur of Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, through the echoing ancient charm of North Macedonia and the flickering radiance of Greece’s Aegean coast, to the lively mortal warmth and the majestic Great Wall of China. Photographers from the five countries jointly unfold a long visual arc stretching from the West to the East. This is not merely a geographical crossing, but a profound encounter and dialogue between civilizations of diverse origins, interpreted through the language of photography.

Such in-depth cross-border dialogue and exchange is underpinned by rigorous academic guidance. Boasting a distinguished academic team, the exhibition’s Art Committee is led by Mr. Chen Changfen, a towering figure in Chinese photography renowned for his iconic series The Great Wall of China. The committee is further composed of leading representatives from authoritative photography institutions across Romania, Greece, Russia and North Macedonia. It embodies not only the convergence of cross-border professional forces, but also the in-depth integration of Eastern and Western photographic academic visions. The Great Wall in Mr. Chen Changfen’s lens, a timeless symbol of the Chinese national spirit, forms a cross-temporal intertextuality with the time-honored castles and relics of Eastern Europe. This strong academic foundation ensures the exhibition maintains professionalism, rigor and inclusiveness at an exceptionally high standard.

Notably, the participation of Mr. Feng Xuemin, President of the Overseas Chinese Photography Exchange Association in Japan, together with six overseas Chinese photographers based in Japan, infuses unique cross-cultural vitality into this cross-latitude dialogue. Residing in foreign lands, their lenses embody both the profound affection of overseas Chinese for their homeland and the inherent aesthetics of the East, while integrating fresh perceptual insights and evolving visual perspectives nurtured by overseas life. Their unique vision serves as a flexible cultural bridge, enriching and diversifying the connotation of “the East” through cultural integration and mutual appreciation.

As noted in our previous exhibitionReflection & Phenomenon, differences in Chinese and Western cultural backgrounds inevitably give rise to distinct photographic expressions. Such differences remain striking and captivating in this juxtaposed multi-country exhibition. The lenses of Russian and Romanian photographers often carry the solemnity and compassion forged by historical sediment; works from North Macedonia and Greece are permeated with the profundity and philosophical contemplation of ancient civilizations; while Eastern Chinese photography lingers with the poetic charm and artistic verve nurtured by traditional culture, capturing the warmth of the unity of humanity and nature amid the cycles of all living things.

Some works lay bare the depth of life directly, inviting viewers to taste the joys and sorrows of mortal existence; others transform life experiences into artistic conception, awaiting quiet contemplation and interpretation. Nevertheless, the juxtaposition of works from the five countries reaffirms a simple truth: within the universal language of photography, all stylistic differences ultimately converge in the shared concern for humanity. Whether it is a solitary figure on an Eastern European street or a smiling face in an Eastern village, all works are rooted in the warmth of ordinary life, witnessing the tenacious and beautiful blooming of life in specific time and space.

The shadow of the pandemic that once drove art exhibitions online has gradually faded with the passage of time. Yet China Photography Online has never ceased its in-depth exploration of cloud-based exhibitions. What was once a makeshift solution to sustain artistic exchange has now become a normalized way of roaming art online. From the interactive cultural dialogue of Reflection & Phenomenon to the in-depth academic co-creation of this five-country exhibition spanning Eastern Europe and the East, the online platform has broken the barriers of physical space, evolving into a broader and more resilient bridge connecting the Chinese and international photography communities. Years of persistent accumulation have freed international artistic communication from geographical constraints, enabling profound resonance within the core of diverse cultures.

Framed within a small lens, time and space are redefined by the artist’s heart; diverse photographic visions, united in spirit, jointly sing the authentic melody of mortal life. Transcending the limitations of language and form, we confront the flowing imagery of five nations, witnessing the harmonious integration of humanity and rationality beyond territorial boundaries.

Sustaining such cross-cultural exchanges is not merely a responsibility, but also the warmest affirmation we deliver to one another through photography in an ever-changing world.
